Imaging Scans & X-Rays When You Need Them

When something doesn’t feel right, waiting weeks for a scan can be worrying and disruptive. At samedaydoctor Canary Wharf, we work with trusted diagnostic partners to arrange private imaging quickly.

Whether you need a chest X-ray, an abdominal ultrasound, or more detailed cross-sectional scans (e.g. CT, MRI, Ultrasound, Echocardiogram), we’ll guide you through what’s needed and help you get the answers without delay.

If you’re experiencing ongoing symptoms, have been injured, or need further investigation after blood tests or a consultation, imaging can provide crucial clarity.

What’s Involved

Your referral starts with a consultation at our Canary Wharf clinic or remotely by phone or video. Your GP will listen carefully to your symptoms, assess whether imaging is needed, and explain which type of scan is most appropriate.

If imaging is advised, we’ll arrange your referral to a local private imaging centre with speed and care.

Once your scan is complete, results are typically available within 24–48 hours or sooner, if urgent. Your results will be reviewed by your GP, who will explain the findings clearly and advise on any next steps.

When You Might Need Imaging Services

You might be referred for a scan if you’re experiencing:

  • Persistent or unexplained pain

  • Breathing issues, a chronic cough, or chest discomfort

  • Digestive problems or abdominal pain

  • Suspected fractures or joint injuries

  • Changes in menstrual cycles or pelvic discomfort

  • Unexplained lumps or swelling

  • Headaches, dizziness, or neurological symptoms

  • Concerns during early pregnancy

  • Monitoring a known condition or checking for recurrence

If you’re unsure whether you need a scan, your GP will assess your symptoms and explain whether imaging is the right next step.

What Can Be Arranged?

We can refer you for a full range of imaging services, including:

  • X-rays
Quick, painless imaging for bones, lungs, and joints, ideal for diagnosing fractures, infections, arthritis, and chest concerns.

  • Ultrasound Scans
Real-time imaging using sound waves, often used for examining the abdomen, pelvis, thyroid, or blood vessels. Also helpful in early pregnancy and for investigating lumps or pain.

  • CT Scans (Computed Tomography)
Detailed cross-sectional images of the body, particularly useful for detecting internal injuries, tumours, and issues with blood vessels or organs.

  • MRI Scans (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)
High-resolution imaging of soft tissues such as the brain, spinal cord, joints, and internal organs. Often used for complex or chronic conditions.

  • Cardiology Tests
These include non-invasive tests such as 24-hour ECG monitoring, exercise ECG, 24-hour blood pressure monitoring, and echocardiograms. They’re used to assess how your heart is functioning over time or under stress, helping to detect irregular rhythms, blood pressure issues, or signs of heart disease.

  • Mammography
Targeted breast imaging for investigating symptoms or conducting private breast cancer screening.

If you’re unsure what scan you need, your GP will talk you through the options and ensure you’re referred for the most appropriate test.

What Happens Next?

Once your scan has taken place, your results are usually returned within 24-48 hours, unless urgent, depending on the type of scan and urgency. Your GP will review the findings report in detail and email you a copy, then call to discuss any concerns.

If further investigations, treatment, or referrals are needed, we’ll help coordinate the next steps promptly and clearly. We aim to make this process as easy and stress-free as possible, giving you peace of mind without waiting list delays.

FAQs

No, imaging referrals must be made by a doctor following a clinical assessment. This ensures the right test is chosen and interpreted correctly.

Some scans require preparation (e.g. fasting, a full bladder). We’ll give you clear instructions based on the type of scan arranged.

We partner with local private imaging centres in and around London for quick access and high-quality diagnostics.

Your GP will contact you, usually within 1–2 days, to talk through the results and any recommended next steps.
