At samedaydoctor Canary Wharf, we believe healthcare extends beyond diagnosing illness and treating symptoms. It also means recognising the wider factors that affect people’s health and supporting our community wherever we can.

That belief recently brought Dr Gurpreet Gill together with volunteers from Nishkam SWAT, alongside the team at Savona Dental, to help prepare and distribute essential care packages for people experiencing homelessness in Stratford.

The bags contained practical everyday items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, warm socks and feminine hygiene products. While these may seem like small things, they can make a meaningful difference to someone’s comfort, dignity and overall wellbeing.

Who are Nishkam SWAT?

Nishkam SWAT is an incredible volunteer-led charity that supports vulnerable people across London through outreach initiatives, food distribution and practical assistance. Its volunteers work throughout the year to help people experiencing homelessness and others facing difficult circumstances, providing not only essential supplies but also kindness, compassion and human connection.

Supporting organisations like Nishkam SWAT helps ensure that practical assistance reaches people where and when it is needed most.

Thank you to Savonda Dental for capturing some images from the day!

Health begins with basic essentials

As healthcare professionals, we see every day how closely health is linked to people’s living circumstances.

Access to clean clothing, hygiene products, nutritious food and safe shelter all play a vital role in preventing illness and protecting both physical and mental wellbeing. When these basic needs aren’t met, maintaining good health becomes significantly more difficult.

While medical treatment is an important part of healthcare, it’s only one piece of the picture. Supporting initiatives that help meet these everyday needs is another way of improving health within our local community.

Inspired by the Principle of Seva

For Dr Gurpreet Gill, as well as the team at Savona Dental, taking part in community initiatives such as this is rooted in the Sikh principle of seva, meaning selfless service.

Seva encourages giving time, skills and support to others without expecting anything in return. It is a value that has shaped Gurpreet’s approach to both healthcare and community involvement throughout her career.

Reflecting on the day, Dr Gill said:

“Supporting our local community is deeply important to me because healthcare should extend beyond the walls of our clinics. Everyone deserves to be treated with dignity, compassion and respect, regardless of their circumstances. Even relatively simple support can make a meaningful difference to someone’s health and wellbeing.

This initiative also demonstrates what can be achieved when local healthcare professionals and community organisations work together. By combining our different skills, resources and understanding of patients’ needs, we can reach people who may otherwise struggle to access support and create a much greater impact than any one organisation could achieve alone. Canary Wharf and East London are not simply where I work. They are communities I feel genuinely proud and responsible to serve.”

Working together for a stronger community

One of the most rewarding aspects of the initiative was seeing local organisations come together with a shared purpose.

Working alongside Savona Dental, Nishkam SWAT and fellow volunteers demonstrated the impact that collaboration can have. By combining our time, resources and expertise, we were able to support people in our community in a practical and meaningful way.

We are grateful to everyone who made the day possible, particularly the dedicated volunteers at Nishkam SWAT, whose commitment continues to make a lasting difference across London.

We hope this will be the first of many opportunities to work alongside local charities and organisations, supporting healthier, stronger communities both inside and outside the clinic.
